Rasuwa and Trishuli River Corridor Flood Disaster, 2026

Detailed Incident Report: Rasuwa and Trishuli River Corridor Flood Disaster, 2026

1. Background and Introduction

On the morning of August 26, 2026, at around 9:00 AM, a massive flash flood occurred in the border region connected to the Tibet region of China in northern Nepal. This is considered one of the largest and most devastating natural disasters in recent times. Triggered without prior notice, this debris-laden flood caused massive devastation to settlements and infrastructure in the border areas.

2. Location of the Incident and Affected Areas

  • Origin and Primary Impact Area: The flood originated from the Lhende Khola (a tributary of the Bhote Koshi River) in Tibet and caused severe destruction in border areas such as Timure, Syaprubesi, Rasuwagadhi, and the Miteri Bridge area under Uttargaya and Kalika Rural Municipalities of Rasuwa District.
  • Downstream Impact Area: As the floodwaters flowed from the Bhote Koshi into the Trishuli River, its impact spread to riverbank settlements across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Chitwan, and Nawalparasi.

3. Probable Causes of the Flood

According to preliminary reports from relevant technical bodies and geologists:

  • An ice avalanche or rockfall in the glacial region on the Tibetan side blocked the river.
  • The sudden burst of the resulting blocked lake, or rapid melting of snow due to high temperatures, generated an abnormal flash flood that directly entered the Bhote Koshi River.
  • Since there was no rainfall in the local area on that day, it has been confirmed that the primary cause of the flood was upper-stream geographical and climatic factors.

4. Human Casualties and Missing Persons

According to the latest updated statistics from security agencies and local administration:

  • Deaths and Injuries: At least 162 people have been confirmed dead due to the disaster, and over 75 are injured.
  • Missing and Uncontactable: Hundreds of people, including local residents, workers employed in various hydropower projects, border area employees, and numerous travelers (especially pilgrims heading to Kailash Mansarovar), remain missing or uncontactable.
  • Security Personnel and Staff: Dozens of security personnel from the Nepal Police, Nepali Army, and Armed Police Force deployed for rescue and security, along with staff of the Timure Customs Office, were caught in the flood.

5. Damage to Physical and Economic Infrastructure

  • Roads and Bridges: Major north-south connecting routes, about 40 kilometers of roads, and over 19 motorable bridges were completely washed away or damaged. Main national highways remain obstructed at various points.
  • Hydropower Projects: Severe damage was inflicted on around 9 major hydropower projects and substations along the Trishuli corridor, including Rasuwagadhi and Chilime, disrupting power generation and supply to the national grid.
  • Commercial and Residential Structures: Timure Bazaar, the Rasuwagadhi Dry Port, customs office buildings, and hundreds of container trucks stranded in the border area were completely wiped out. Bank and financial institution branches were also washed away.

6. Government Response, Rescue, and Relief Operations

  • Rescue Operations: Search and rescue operations are being conducted on a war footing using helicopters and drones by teams from the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force. The injured have been brought to various hospitals for free medical treatment.
  • Vigilance and Relief: The administration has issued public notices and used loudspeaker announcements urging high vigilance in the riverbank areas of the Trishuli and Narayani rivers. The government has established an emergency relief fund to advance relief and rehabilitation work.
  • International Solidarity: Neighboring countries and the international community have extended helping hands to provide rescue and relief materials to Nepal during this grave crisis.
